Traditional raclette grill: half wheel and quarter wheel models

By Charles Neveu Updated on 07/10/2026 Analysed Editor's review

A traditional raclette grill melts a half or quarter wheel of cheese under a heating element: you scrape the melted surface straight onto the potatoes, the way it is done in a chalet in Savoie or the Swiss Valais. If you are still weighing it against a raclette machine with individual pans, our category page compares every type. Here I have gathered 10 wheel melters sold on Amazon France, from Louis Tellier (Alpage, Brézière) to Boska, Little Balance and Livoo, after reading each manufacturer's page and recording prices on 07/10/2026. Each one has its drawback spelled out.

Half wheel of raclette cheese under the heating element of a traditional melter, scraped with a knife over a plate of potatoes, with gherkins, pearl onions and cured ham

Traditional raclette grill: our 3 picks

For a big table, go for the Louis Tellier Alpage; for a quarter wheel, the Brézière; on a small budget, the Little Balance Savoyarde 1/4.

For a big table: Louis Tellier Alpage RACL01 (141.49 euros on 07/10/2026). Its drawback first: Louis Tellier gives no number of guests, and you lower the heater by hand as the cheese melts. Otherwise, this is the half-wheel model Louis Tellier labels as its best seller: an 850 W horizontal heater with rack-and-pinion height adjustment, a stainless steel body, made in France.

For a quarter wheel: Louis Tellier Brézière BREZ01 (159.99 euros on 07/10/2026). Its page contradicts itself on power (1,000 W in the title, 850 W in the spec table), hence the "n.c." in our grid. It holds a quarter or a sixth of a wheel between two vertical heaters, which fold down for storage.

Small budget: Little Balance Savoyarde 1/4 wheel 8761 (46.76 euros on 07/10/2026). The catch: 600 W and made in China. In return, the cheese holder slides, swivels and can be raised, and it takes a quarter wheel for 4 people.

Why choose a traditional wheel raclette?

You choose a traditional raclette for the taste of the toasted rind and the scraping ritual, not for convenience. The word raclette itself comes from the French verb racler, to scrape. The heater warms the cut face of the cheese wheel, the surface melts and browns, then you slide it onto the plate with a scraper or a raclette knife.

  • The upsides: a thick layer of melted cheese with its rind, a real show at the table, and a simple appliance, often stainless steel, with no pans to wash.
  • The downsides: the price (40.00 to 220.90 euros in our selection), buying a piece of the wheel from the cheese counter, and one person who stays in charge of scraping while the others eat.

These machines only melt cheese, except those with a grill plate on top (Little Balance 8752, Livoo DOC159) for cured meats. For dinner for two without a wheel, our 2-person raclette grill selection covers small models with pans.

Half wheel or quarter wheel: which format?

Pick a half wheel from 6 people up, a quarter wheel for 2 to 6. The format sets the size of the machine: the Alpage is 46 cm long, a Brézière 44.5 cm and a Compact-Pro 33 cm according to Louis Tellier.

Cheese format Table size Models in our selection Prices on 07/10/2026
Half wheel 6 people and more Alpage, Boska Raclette Demi, Little Balance 8752 89.58 to 144.99 euros
Quarter or sixth of a wheel 2 to 6 people Brézière Original, Premium and Corail, Little Balance 8761 46.76 to 220.90 euros
Half or quarter, your choice 6 to 8 people according to Livoo Livoo DOC314 40.00 euros

Beyond 8 guests, plan two wheel melters, or a model with pans from our 8-person raclette grill page, so nobody waits between rounds.

How to choose a traditional raclette grill

Check, in this order, the wheel size it takes, the power, the cheese holder adjustments and then where it is made.

Wheel size and number of guests

Make sure the manufacturer's page states the portion it takes: half, quarter or sixth of a wheel. Livoo and Amazon sometimes disagree (the DOC159 is sold as "1/2 wheel" in one title and "quarter wheel" in the table), and Louis Tellier gives no number of guests for the Alpage.

Power and heating element

Power ranges from 600 to 850 W among the models with a stated wattage. A horizontal heater (Alpage) warms the top of a half wheel; two vertical heaters (Brézière) frame a quarter wheel. The power dial on the Brézière Corail and the adjustable thermostat on the Little Balance 8752 and the Livoo models let you lower the heat to suit the cheese.

Adjustments: height, swivel, tilt

A cheese holder that adjusts in height, swivels or tilts brings the wheel back to the heater as it melts. Boska uses a rotating mechanism that puts the cheese back in one move, Livoo a base that swivels 360°. On the Alpage, it is the heater that comes down on a rack.

Build, materials and professional raclette machines

The Alpage and Brézière are stainless steel and made in France; the Louis Tellier group explains that they were born in the Bron factory in Thonon-les-Bains, in Haute-Savoie, and that production has moved to its site in Touraine. The Little Balance, Livoo and Compact-Pro models are made in China. On warranty, Boska covers the frame for life and the electrical parts for 2 years. For professional use (caterers, buffets), Louis Tellier and Boska explicitly target the restaurant trade.

How we selected these models

I picked 10 traditional raclette grills available on Amazon France on 07/10/2026. For each one, I recorded the price, availability and seller on the Amazon page, then cross-checked the wheel size, power, number of guests and country of manufacture against the manufacturer's page (Louis Tellier, Boska, Little Balance, Livoo). A value that is missing or contradictory is marked "n.c." (not communicated). None of these machines has been tested hands-on: the score out of 5 is an editor's review based on this data, cleaning and price. The full approach is on our method page.

The models we left out

  • Bron Coucke RACL05 and BREZ05: these references under the Bron Coucke name (a half-wheel model and a Brézière) still appear on Amazon, but with no price or offer when we checked on 07/10/2026.
  • Bron Coucke TTM05: 382.80 euros from a third-party seller for a 600 W quarter-wheel model, with 2 units in stock. The price shown on Amazon when you buy is the one that applies.
  • Klarstein raclette and grill 1000 W: the closest Klarstein page describes a plate grill for two, with no wheel holder. The product sold on Amazon could not be matched.
  • Cécoa traditional raclette: 400 W in the title, 800 W in the spec table, and no manufacturer page to settle it.

Frequently asked questions

What cheese should you buy for a traditional raclette grill?

Buy a piece of raclette cheese cut from the wheel at the cheese counter: a half wheel for a half-wheel machine, a quarter for a Brézière or a Savoyarde 1/4. Keep the rind, it toasts under the heater. Then choose to taste, raw or pasteurised milk, from Savoie or the Valais in Switzerland.

What power for a half-wheel raclette grill?

In our selection, half-wheel models with a stated wattage range from 600 W (Livoo DOC314) to 850 W (Alpage, Little Balance 8752), with the Boska at 750 W. The higher the power, the faster the cheese melts between two passes of the scraper, which matters with 6 or 8 people.

How do you use a traditional raclette grill?

Fix the piece of wheel on the cheese holder, rind facing out, then switch on the heater. When the surface melts and browns, tilt or swivel the cheese and scrape the melted layer onto the potatoes and cured meats. Then move the wheel back towards the heater for the next round.

What is the difference between the Louis Tellier Alpage and Brézière?

The Alpage holds a half wheel under a single 850 W horizontal heater; the Brézière holds a quarter or a sixth of a wheel between two vertical heaters. The Alpage is aimed at big tables, the Brézière at 2 to 6 people according to Amazon. Both are stainless steel and made in France according to Louis Tellier.

How do you clean a traditional raclette grill?

Unplug it and let it cool, then remove the cheese holder: on the Boska Raclette Demi and the Brézière Corail, it is dishwasher safe according to their makers. Wipe the base and the heater with a damp cloth, and never put them in water.
