The best cast iron Dutch oven holds gentle heat for hours without you watching it: a thick base, a heavy lid, and enamel or bare cast iron depending on how you cook. For braising, slow cooking, searing or baking bread, I compared 14 listings from six makers, checked their prices on 24 October 2026 and kept 7 models, each for a specific profile. Each model's drawback comes before its strengths. To understand the material before picking a brand, start with our cast iron Dutch oven page.
This comparison is based on reading product pages, not on hands-on testing: the team has not used any of these pots, hence the "Editor's review" badge. I checked 14 Amazon listings on 24 October 2026, from 20 to 28 cm, enameled and bare cast iron, then kept the 7 that cover each profile with an active offer.
For each one, I noted the price, availability and seller, then cross-checked capacity, weight, maximum oven temperature and care against the manufacturer's page: Staub on the Zwilling site, Chasseur and Lodge on their own sites. When the retailer and the maker disagree, the maker wins; a value that is missing or contradictory is marked "n.c.". The Le Creuset site could not be read, so its figures come from its retail listing. We do not reuse customer ratings or other sites' rankings.
| Criterion | What we looked at | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Capacity | Litres and servings stated by the maker | Same diameter does not mean same volume across brands |
| Lid | Spikes or ridges underneath, or smooth | It drives condensation and basting |
| Oven | Published maximum temperature | Braising and baking bread |
| Care | Dishwasher, hand wash, seasoning | Enamel and bare iron are not looked after the same way |
| Weight | Maker's page, in kilograms | A full pot needs two hands |
Each model's score out of 5 is an editorial opinion based on these criteria and on price. The full process is explained in our method.
Each model comes with its profile, its drawback first, then what sets it apart.
Who it's for: slow cooking a beef bourguignon or a veal blanquette for 4, on any heat source.
What nobody tells you: at 24 cm it holds only 3.7 litres according to Staub, while the Le Creuset of the same diameter claims 4.2. It also weighs 4.69 kg empty, and its matte black enamel interior hides the colour of the browning: you cannot watch caramelisation as easily.
What I liked: its flat lid is described as tight-fitting, with spikes underneath: steam condenses and drips back onto the meat, which is continuous basting. It handles 260 °C in the oven, works on gas, ceramic and induction, is dishwasher-safe and made in France according to Zwilling, which recommends it for stews, roasts, poultry and bread. On the day we checked, it cost less than the Le Creuset of the same size.
Who it's for: a round pot made in France for 4 to 6 people, without paying Staub prices.
What nobody tells you: the offer comes from a third-party seller, above the 109.95 euro list price on 24 October 2026 shown on the maker's site, where this size was out of stock that day. Dishwasher use is only mentioned on the retail listing: the maker itself advises against scourers and abrasive cleaners. We mark it n.c.
What I liked: the Ardennes maker, part of the Invicta group, claims 4 litres for 4 to 6 people, more than the 24 cm Staub, for 4.6 kg. The ridges under the lid condense and redistribute the flavour-laden moisture, the same continuous basting idea. It works on all hobs including induction, goes in the oven, and is handmade according to the maker. Its retail listing states a lifetime guarantee.
Who it's for: a big, cheap cast iron pot for soups and Sunday stews.
What nobody tells you: it is hand wash only, and neither its diameter nor its induction compatibility is stated. There is no independent manufacturer page to cross-check its figures.
What I liked: 5.7 litres of enameled cast iron at the lowest price in this selection, a cast iron lid, two side handles and oven use up to 260 °C according to its listing. It weighs 5.97 kg and is made in China. As a first cast iron pot for braising and roasting, it is the most affordable way in.
Who it's for: a pot for 4 that goes in the dishwasher and lasts a lifetime.
What nobody tells you: it was the most expensive 24 cm pot on the day we checked, and the maximum oven temperature appears on no brand page we could read. Its listing does not mention any spikes.
What I liked: 4.2 litres for 4.3 kg, more usable volume and less weight than the Staub of the same diameter. It is made in France, works on every heat source including induction, is dishwasher-safe and its listing states a lifetime guarantee. Its lid has an oven-safe stainless steel knob, and its light, wear-resistant enamel interior lets you see the colour of a sauce.
Who it's for: cooking a pot-au-feu or a coq au vin for 6 to 7.
What nobody tells you: 7.09 kg empty according to Staub. Filled with 6 litres of stew, it weighs over 13 kg and comes out of the oven with two hands and good oven gloves.
What I liked: 6.7 litres for 6 to 7 people according to the maker, the largest round enameled pot in this selection. It has the same spiked lid as the 24 cm, handles 260 °C, is dishwasher-safe, and its retail listing states a 2-year guarantee. Its cast iron has strong thermal inertia: once hot, it spreads heat evenly across the base and sides, and a dish stays hot at the table.
Who it's for: baking no-knead bread, braising or cooking over embers.
What nobody tells you: it ships from the United States, and its listing contradicts itself on the guarantee (1 year in the table, 20 years in the text): we mark it n.c. Above all, bare cast iron needs the same care as a cast iron skillet: hand wash, dry immediately and wipe with a thin coat of oil, or it rusts.
What I liked: no enamel that can chip. Lodge ships it pre-seasoned with vegetable oil and makes it in the United States; it goes on gas, induction, in the oven, on the barbecue and over a campfire. Seasoning, the layer of baked-on oil that protects the metal, builds up with every use and makes the surface less and less sticky.
Who it's for: an enameled pot for 4 to 5 people at an entry-level price.
What nobody tells you: all its specifications come from the retail listing alone, it is only covered for one year according to that listing, it is hand wash only and the maximum oven temperature is not clear. It is made in China.
What I liked: 5.2 litres in 26 cm, all hobs including induction, with a thick lid that condenses steam according to the maker. When checked, it cost a few euros more than the Amazon Basics, with a stated diameter.

| The drawback | Hand wash only, diameter and induction compatibility not stated, and no manufacturer page outside Amazon to cross-check. | All its specifications come from the Amazon listing alone, the stated guarantee is one year and it is hand wash only. | Shipped by Amazon US, it needs the same care as a cast iron skillet (hand wash, dry, thin coat of oil) and its listing gives two different guarantees. | Sold by a third-party seller, above the list price shown by Chasseur on its own site, and the dishwasher is only allowed on the Amazon listing. | Only 3.7 litres for 24 cm, less than the Le Creuset of the same diameter, and 4.69 kg empty according to Staub. | 7.09 kg empty according to Staub: full, it weighs over 13 kg and comes out of the oven with two hands. | The most expensive 24 cm pot when checked, and the maximum oven temperature appears on no brand page we could read. |

Choose the capacity first, then the shape, the basting system and finally the surface, enamel or bare iron: these are the criteria that separate these models most.
Allow about 1 litre per person for a stew. But at the same diameter, makers do not give the same volume, because wall height varies.
| Diameter | Staub | Le Creuset Signature | Chasseur |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 cm | 3.7 L (4 servings) | 4.2 L (n.c.) | 4 L (4 to 6 servings) |
| 28 cm | 6.7 L (6 to 7) | n.c. | 6 L (6 to 8) |
A 24 cm pot is enough for 4; beyond 6 guests, move up to 28 cm or to the 5.7 litre budget models.
A round pot suits stews, pot-au-feu, soups and bread: it heats evenly on a round burner. An oval pot takes a whole chicken or a roast, but needs a large burner and holds less for its length: 4.1 litres for the 27 cm Le Creuset oval, less than the 24 cm round.
For slow cooking, everything happens under the lid, through condensation. Staub puts spikes underneath, the Ardennes maker uses ridges, Overmont talks of a thick lid that condenses steam; the Le Creuset listing mentions no relief. All of them keep moisture in; spikes and ridges make it drip back onto the food. Prefer a stainless steel or cast iron knob, which is oven-safe.
Enamel, glass fused onto the iron, needs no seasoning, copes with wine and tomato and is dishwasher-safe at Staub and Le Creuset. Bare cast iron must be seasoned and maintained, but nothing can chip and it goes on embers. Avoid thermal shock in both cases: heat up gradually, without the boost function on induction, as the Ardennes maker advises, and let it cool before washing.
The three French makers in this selection claim French manufacturing; Lodge makes its pots in the United States, Overmont and Amazon Basics in China. Made in France comes at a cost: when checked on 24 October 2026, the three French pots cost from two and a half to more than four times the price of the Chinese ones. In return, they are the only ones that allow the dishwasher. To compare the two leaders, our Le Creuset or Staub head-to-head and our Staub Dutch oven page will cover their ranges.
Seven listings checked on 24 October 2026 were set aside, for reasons that could be verified that day:
A search for Invicta and Fontignac returned no listing clearly carrying either name on the day we checked.
The price shown on Amazon when you buy is the one that applies.
No single brand is best for everyone. Staub stands out for its spiked lid and 260 °C oven rating, Le Creuset for its capacity and lighter weight, Chasseur for cheaper French manufacturing, Lodge for bare cast iron. Choose the capacity first, then the basting system, then the brand.
The lid and the enamel. Staub has a flat lid with spikes and a matte black interior; Le Creuset has a light enamel interior and no stated relief under the lid. At 24 cm, Le Creuset holds 4.2 litres against 3.7 for Staub, and weighs less. Both are made in France and dishwasher-safe.
Cast iron, for long slow cooking: it heats up gently and holds heat, so you can cook on the lowest setting. A ceramic pot is lighter but holds less heat and is more sensitive to knocks. For stews, enameled cast iron remains the reference among French makers.
It is an enameled pot made in China, sold for much less than the French brands, with 5.2 litres in 26 cm. Its specifications are only published on its retail listing, it is hand wash only and that listing states one year of cover. We do not reuse customer reviews.
Nothing we read suggests otherwise. Enamel is glass fused onto the iron, and none of the pots in this selection has a non-stick coating. Replace a pot whose interior enamel is cracked or chipped, and never heat an empty cast iron pot on full power.
