An air fryer cooks fries, chicken and vegetables by blowing very hot air around them, with little or no fat: that is why the French also call it a "friteuse sans huile", an oil-free fryer. Choose one first on usable capacity and the number of drawers, then on the basket coating, the cooking window and how much counter space it takes. I compared 15 models on sale from Ninja, Philips, Cosori, Moulinex, Tefal and Instant, from a small 3.5 L basket to a 10 L dual drawer, reading their manufacturer pages and checking their prices on 07/10/2026. Each one has its drawback spelled out.

Our 2026 air fryer comparison
Our air fryer comparison will rank the best models by profile: large family, small budget, dual drawer, PTFE-free basket. This page helps you pick the right type of air fryer before comparing models: the grid above already lists the 15 models we checked, with the day's price.
Air fryer, hot air fryer or oil-free fryer: what is the difference?
There is no difference between an air fryer, a hot air fryer and an oil-free fryer: they are three names for the same appliance. "Air fryer" describes the technology, cooking with forced hot air (people also search for "airwave fryer" or even "hair fryer"); "oil-free fryer" describes the promised result. Ninja itself writes "the air fryer, or oil-free fryer" on its French website, and elsewhere calls it a "hot air fryer".
How does an air fryer work?
A heating element above the basket heats the air and a fan circulates it at high speed around the food: this is convection cooking, as in a fan oven, but in a much smaller cavity that heats up faster. The surface dries and browns, which gives the crisp finish without deep frying. Very little fat is needed: Moulinex says its reference test cooked 700 g of fresh fries with 8 ml of oil, against 2 L for a traditional deep fryer. A few models add a second element under the basket, such as the Cosori Twinfry, to brown the underside without turning the food.
Air fryer or deep fryer?
A traditional deep fryer plunges food into a bath of oil: cooking is quicker and the taste is that of real frying, but the oil has to be filtered, stored and replaced, and the smell lingers in the kitchen. An air fryer is a little slower with fries, but it can also roast, grill, bake a cake or reheat leftovers: it is a small multi-function appliance, closer to a mini oven than to a fryer. If you mostly want old-style fries and doughnuts, an electric deep fryer is the better fit.
Which type of air fryer should you choose?
There are five main families of air fryers: the single drawer, the dual drawer, the XXL large-capacity model, the model with a window and the ceramic or glass baskets. The table at the end of this section sums them up.
The single-drawer air fryer
This is the most common format: one drawer with a non-stick basket, touchscreen or button controls, and 4 to 16 modes depending on the brand. From 3.5 L (Tefal Easy Fry Essential) to 6.2 L (Ninja Air Fryer MAX PRO, Philips 3000 Series, Cosori 6.2 L), it suits a single person as well as a family of four. Its strength: the smallest footprint for the capacity. Its limit: one dish at a time, so the meat and the side are cooked one after the other.
The dual-drawer air fryer
A dual-drawer air fryer has two drawers and two independent cooking zones: you cook two recipes at two temperatures, and the sync function makes them finish together. Ninja offers several in its Dual Zone range; Philips, Moulinex and Instant make them too. The 7.6 L Ninja Foodi Dual Zone AF300, which had no listed price on Amazon on the day we checked, has its own page: Ninja Foodi Dual Zone. Our dual basket air fryer page compares this format, which does take up 40 to 52 cm of counter width.
The XXL, large-capacity air fryer
Above 8 L, an XXL air fryer feeds a large family and takes a whole chicken. Two designs exist side by side: two drawers next to each other (Ninja Foodi MAX Dual Zone, Philips 3000 Series dual basket) or one large drawer with a removable divider (Ninja FlexDrawer, Cosori Twinfry). Ninja also stacked its two drawers vertically on the Double Stack XL to save width. Large-capacity air fryers have their own page.
The air fryer with a window
A window in the drawer lets you check on cooking without opening it, so no heat escapes. The Philips NA330, the Cosori 6.2 L (with an interior light) and the Moulinex Easy Fry & Grill Vision (removable window) all have one. An air fryer oven goes further with a glass door and several racks, at the cost of a mini oven's footprint. Our air fryer with a window page covers both options.
The PFAS-free air fryer
Most baskets are metal with a non-stick coating whose nature manufacturers often leave unstated; the Amazon listing for the Moulinex Easy Fry Max says PTFE, the fluoropolymer best known under the Teflon brand. In France, cookware was removed from the 27 February 2025 PFAS law during its reading in the National Assembly, according to the French Senate. The only written commitment we found from a manufacturer is Ninja's for its CRISPi: glass containers and food-contact surfaces "designed without PFAS or PTFE". Cosori claims a 100% ceramic coating on its Twinfry, without mentioning PFAS. Be wary of Amazon titles: the Cosori TurboBlaze's promises a PFAS-free ceramic coating that Cosori's manual does not mention. Our PFAS-free air fryer page covers these alternatives and the regulations.
The budget air fryer
An entry-level air fryer costs between 50 and 75 euros in our 07/10/2026 price check: Tefal EY1308, Philips NA330, Moulinex EZ2458. You mostly lose the second drawer and sometimes the display, rarely the capacity. The current best deals are gathered on our budget air fryer page.

How to choose an oil-free air fryer
An oil-free air fryer is chosen on five criteria: capacity, number of drawers, power use, the basket and the programmes.
Capacity for your household size
The capacity in litres is the size of the drawer, not the amount of food: for a 6.2 L drawer, Philips quotes 1 kg of vegetables and Cosori 1.4 kg of fries. Allow 3 to 4 L for one or two people, 5 to 6.2 L for a family of four and 8 L or more beyond that. Manufacturers often give a more telling benchmark: a 2 kg chicken per drawer on the Ninja Foodi MAX Dual Zone, a 2.3 kg one on the Cosori 6.2 L.
One or two drawers
Two drawers make sense if you often cook a main and a side: the meat in one, the potatoes in the other, finishing at the same time. For big batches of a single recipe, one large drawer or a modular basket (FlexDrawer, Twinfry) holds more because there is no divider in the middle. Watch out for unequal drawers: on the Philips, the small 3 L one only takes a side dish.
Electricity consumption
Air fryer power ranges from 1,500 W for a 5 L model to 2,800 W for a 10 L drawer among our models, where the manufacturer publishes it. Power does not tell you actual consumption: the element switches off once the temperature is reached. As a rough guide, a 1,700 W appliance heating at full power for 20 minutes would use at most 0.57 kWh. Manufacturers claim 50 to 80% energy savings compared with a conventional oven based on their own tests (Moulinex up to 70%, Instant up to 80%): these figures cannot be compared from one brand to another.
The basket and cleaning
The non-stick basket is dishwasher-safe on 14 of our 15 models according to their manufacturer; for the Moulinex Easy Fry & Grill Vision, the spec sheet says no and the manual says yes for the bowl and rack. To make it last, the French consumer magazine Que Choisir recommends wooden or silicone utensils, no abrasive sponge, and replacing the basket as soon as it is scratched. Suitable baking paper or air fryer dishes in silicone or glass reduce the washing up. The glass of the Ninja CRISPi avoids PTFE.
Programmes and noise
Automatic programmes (fries, poultry, fish, dessert) set the temperature and time for you: 7 to 10 on the Moulinex models, 8 presets on the Philips dual basket. Touchscreens dominate; the small Tefal EY1308 and the Ninja CRISPi keep button controls. On noise, Cosori is the only brand among our models to give a figure (under 53 dB at speed 5 on the TurboBlaze). For cooking times and temperatures for each food, our air fryer cooking times guide will take over.
What budget for an air fryer?
An air fryer costs from 53.54 to 229.99 euros in our 07/10/2026 price check. The budget depends mainly on capacity and the number of drawers, more than on the brand.
- Under 75 euros: entry-level single drawers, from the 3.5 L Tefal EY1308 (53.54 euros) to the 5 L Moulinex EZ2458 (74.99 euros), via the 6.2 L Philips NA330 with a window (69.99 euros).
- 85 to 130 euros: models with a window, a ceramic basket or a first dual drawer, from the 6.2 L Cosori with a window (84.99 euros) to the 8.3 L Moulinex EZ9018 (128.99 euros), with the Ninja CRISPi at 99.99 euros and the Instant Vortex Plus VersaZone at 99.18 euros.
- 150 to 230 euros: the large dual-drawer Ninja models (Foodi MAX Dual Zone 159.49 euros, Double Stack XL 169.59 euros, FlexDrawer 179.59 euros) and the 10 L Cosori Twinfry (229.99 euros).

Air fryer brands: Ninja, Philips, Cosori, Moulinex, Seb
Ninja (part of SharkNinja) supplies the most dual drawers and large formats in our grid, with temperatures up to 240 °C on several models. Philips sells its Airfryer range in 1000 to 5000 Series, with a star-shaped basket floor and recipes in its HomeID app. Cosori relies on its VeSync app and, on the Twinfry, a ceramic coating. Tefal and Moulinex are both brands of the French group SEB and share the Easy Fry range: the Amazon listing for the Moulinex Easy Fry Max even refers to the "Easy Fry Max by Tefal". Seb, the group's third brand, mainly sells the Actifry, an air fryer with a paddle that stirs the food; on the day we checked, Amazon did not sell it directly and the only offers came from third-party sellers with inconsistent listings (one stated a power of 6,998 W), so we left it out. Instant, known for the Instant Pot, completes the grid with its dual-zone Vortex.
Other brands draw plenty of searches, such as Cecotec, Xiaomi, Tristar, Cosylife and Kitchencook: they are not in this first grid and will be checked at the next update. Tower, a British brand, did not come up in any of our Amazon searches on 07/10/2026.
How we selected these models
I picked 15 air fryers available on 07/10/2026, covering every format and household size, from 3.5 to 10.4 L. For each one, I recorded the price, availability and seller on the Amazon listing, then cross-checked capacity, power, number of drawers and basket material against the manufacturer's page; any value that was missing or contradictory is marked "n.c." (not communicated). None of these appliances has been tested hands-on: the score out of 5 is an editor's review based on usable capacity, versatility, cleaning, size and price. The details are on our methodology page. For the rest of your small appliances, our coffee machine selection and our blender comparison follow the same method.
Frequently asked questions
Is an air fryer worth it?
Yes, if you often cook frozen food, poultry, roast vegetables or small batches of homemade fries: an air fryer heats up quickly, saves you turning on the oven and goes in the dishwasher. It is less worthwhile if you mostly cook large batches of fries or if your worktop is already full.
What are the drawbacks of an air fryer?
The three drawbacks of an air fryer are its size on the counter, a real capacity smaller than an oven's and fries that take a little longer than in oil. On most models you also need to shake the basket halfway through, and replace a non-stick basket once it is scratched.
Is an air fryer bad for your health?
No: according to Que Choisir, social media warnings about non-stick baskets should not be taken at face value. PFOA, one of the most criticised PFAS, has been on the EU list of persistent organic pollutants since 4 July 2020, which bans its use apart from limited exemptions. To avoid PTFE altogether, the Ninja CRISPi is the only model in our grid whose manufacturer rules it out in writing.
What can you cook in an air fryer?
Almost anything you would roast in the oven: fresh or frozen fries, drumsticks or a whole chicken depending on capacity, fish, nuggets, cakes and muffins. It is also handy for reheating pizza or leftovers, which come out crisp again. Dishes in sauce and runny batters without a mould, however, do not belong in it.
How much electricity does an air fryer use?
An air fryer uses at most its power multiplied by the cooking time: 1,500 W for 20 minutes comes to 0.5 kWh at most. Because the element switches off once the temperature is reached, real consumption is lower. Multiply by the price per kWh on your contract to get the cost of a recipe.
Do you need to preheat an air fryer?
It is not essential: most air fryers start from cold, and a few minutes of preheating mainly improves the crispness of fries and breaded food. Some models have a dedicated function, such as the preheat reminder on the Cosori 6.2 L. Follow your appliance's manual.
