A coffee machine comes down first to what you drink every morning: a short espresso, a long black coffee, a latte macchiato or a full jug for the whole household. Then come the purchase price, the cost of each cup and the upkeep. I compared 16 coffee makers and machines sold on Amazon France, from a 21.99-euro stovetop moka pot to Sage's portafilter machine, reading each manufacturer's product page and recording prices on 07/10/2026. De'Longhi, Philips, Krups, Siemens, Melitta, Nespresso, Moulinex: every model has its main drawback spelled out before its strengths.

Our coffee machine comparison for 2026
The right machine depends on how you drink your coffee. Our coffee machine brand guide will compare the manufacturers, and our bean-to-cup coffee machine page covers models with a built-in grinder, the largest group in this selection. This page helps you pick the right type of machine before you compare specific products.
Which type of coffee machine should you choose?
There are six main types: the bean-to-cup machine with a grinder, the manual espresso machine, the capsule machine, the soft-pod coffee maker, the electric drip coffee maker and the stovetop moka pot. The table at the end of this section sums them up.
The bean-to-cup coffee machine
A bean-to-cup machine grinds the beans just before brewing, then makes an espresso or a long coffee at the touch of a button: these are the so-called fully automatic machines. Philips (2200 Series), De'Longhi (Magnifica S), Krups (Essential), Siemens (EQ300) and Melitta (Caffeo Solo) sell them for 236.55 to 386.99 euros on 07/10/2026. The upside: freshly ground coffee, adjustable grind and strength, and a low cost per cup. The downside: the purchase price, grinder noise and regular upkeep (rinsing, descaling, cleaning the brewing unit). The models are compared on our bean-to-cup coffee machine page, and the quietest ones in our quiet coffee machine selection.
The manual espresso machine
A manual espresso machine works like the one in a café: you dose ground coffee into the portafilter, tamp it, and the pump pushes hot water through. The Dedica Style and the Stilosa cost 138.98 and 89.90 euros, the Sage Bambino Plus 455.00 euros. They need ground coffee (or an electric coffee grinder alongside) and a bit of practice, but leave every setting in your hands. A steam wand froths milk for cappuccino. The models are gathered on our espresso machine page.
The capsule machine: Nespresso, Dolce Gusto
A capsule machine is the simplest option: one capsule, one button, a cup in under a minute, with no grinding or dosing. Nespresso comes in two incompatible systems (Original, with the Inissia, and Vertuo, with the Vertuo Pop), and Nescafé Dolce Gusto is a third, with milky and chocolate drinks (Piccolo XS). These machines are cheap (39.99 to 79.00 euros on the day we checked), but each capsule costs more than a dose of beans, and each system ties you to its own refills. The topic is covered on our capsule coffee machine page.
The Senseo soft-pod coffee maker
A Senseo pushes hot water at low pressure (1 bar according to Philips) through a soft paper pod: the result is a mild coffee, not an espresso. The Original Plus costs 69.99 euros on the day we checked and makes one or two cups at a time. It suits long-coffee drinkers who want a quick cup without a jug. ESE pods, also made of paper, are a different format designed for manual espresso machines such as the Dedica Style.
The electric drip coffee maker
An electric drip coffee maker (often wrongly called a percolator: a true percolator pushes the water up) drips hot water through ground coffee in a paper filter. For 34.99 euros (Moulinex Subito) or 37.09 euros (Melitta Easy II), it brews 10 to 15 cups at once and keeps them warm on a hot plate. It is the cheapest to buy and per cup, and the only type designed to serve a whole table at breakfast. Our drip coffee maker page compares these models.
The stovetop moka pot
A moka pot sits on the hob: water in the bottom chamber rises under steam pressure through the ground coffee and fills the top chamber. The Bialetti Moka Express, invented in 1933, costs 21.99 euros in the 3-cup size. No electricity, no capsules, nothing to descale. On the other hand, the coffee is strong, the quantity is limited, and the aluminium pot cannot go in the dishwasher or on induction without the Bialetti adapter, according to the manufacturer.
The compact coffee machine
Every type has compact models. Krups' Coffee Crush is 15 cm wide for a bean-to-cup machine, the Dedica Style 15 cm for a manual espresso machine, the Piccolo XS 14 cm for a capsule machine. They are the way to go for a studio or a crowded worktop, at the cost of a smaller tank on the Piccolo XS. Our compact coffee machine page covers this format.
| Type of machine | Who it suits | Strength | Limit | Price on 07/10/2026 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bean-to-cup with grinder | Espresso lovers, several cups a day | Beans ground on demand, low cost per cup | Purchase price, upkeep | 236.55 to 386.99 euros |
| Manual espresso | Those who want to adjust everything | Control over extraction, steam wand | Learning curve, grinder needed | 89.90 to 455.00 euros |
| Capsule | A quick cup, a few cups a day | Simplicity, no settings | Capsule cost, closed system | 39.99 to 79.00 euros |
| Senseo soft pods | Mild long-coffee drinkers | One or two cups in no time | No espresso | 69.99 euros |
| Electric drip | Large households, offices | 10 to 15 cups at once, low price | Hot plate switches off after a while | 34.99 to 37.09 euros |
| Stovetop moka pot | Strong coffee without electricity | Price, nothing to descale | Small quantity, induction needs an adapter | 21.99 euros |

Krups, De'Longhi or Philips: which brand should you choose?
No brand wins across the board: each is strong on one type of machine. A Krups coffee machine can be a bean-to-cup model or a capsule machine: the brand makes the Essential, whose product page carries a "Made in France" badge, the Coffee Crush, the Vertuo Pop for Nespresso and the Piccolo XS for Dolce Gusto, and it promises 15 years of repairability on three of them. If you want a Krups bean-to-cup machine, the Essential is the classic choice and the Coffee Crush the narrowest. De'Longhi is the only brand in our selection present in three types (manual, bean-to-cup, capsule), from 79.00 to 272.91 euros on the day we checked. Philips stands out with its ceramic grinder and AquaClean filter, and with its Senseo range. Siemens and Melitta rely on a brewing unit that slides out for rinsing, Sage on the barista's hands-on approach. Other brands (Jura, Saeco, Gaggia, Smeg, Tassimo by Bosch) are not in this first selection: they will be covered in our coffee machine brand comparison.
How to choose a coffee machine
A coffee machine comes down to five criteria: the drink, the pressure and heating, the grinder, the milk system, then space and noise.
The drink: espresso, long coffee or latte macchiato
Start with what you drink. For a ristretto or a short espresso, go for a bean-to-cup or manual machine. For a long coffee or an americano, a drip coffee maker or a Senseo is enough and costs less. For a latte macchiato or a cappuccino, you need a steam wand or a milk frother (see below). And for the occasional decaf, the ground-coffee drawer on the Coffee Crush saves emptying the bean hopper.
Pressure in bar and the heating system
The advertised pressure (15 or 19 bar) is the pump's: beyond roughly 9 bar at extraction, a higher figure does not make a better espresso. Sage itself states 9 bar extraction on its Bambino Plus, with a 15 bar pump. Look at the heating system instead: a thermoblock (Dedica Style, Inissia) heats water on demand within a few tens of seconds, and Sage's ThermoJet within 3 seconds according to the manufacturer.
The grinder and grind settings
On a bean-to-cup machine, the grinder makes the difference. Philips and Siemens use ceramic burrs, Melitta and Krups steel or metal conical burrs. The number of grind settings ranges from 3 (Krups) to 5 (Caffeo Solo) and 12 (2200 Series): the more settings, the better you can match the grind to arabica or robusta beans and to the roast. If you prefer to grind separately, a coffee grinder pairs well with a manual espresso machine.
Milk: steam wand or automatic frother
There are three systems. A manual steam wand (Magnifica S, Dedica Style, Stilosa, Essential) needs a milk jug and some practice. The EQ300's frother, which froths milk straight into the cup, or the 2200 Series' classic frother, makes it easier. The Bambino Plus's automatic wand sets the milk temperature and texture by itself. There is no milk system at all on the Caffeo Solo, the Inissia or the Vertuo Pop. Machines designed for milky drinks are on our cappuccino machine page.
Space, noise and water tank
Measure the space under your wall cupboards: a standard bean-to-cup machine is 23 to 25 cm wide (Magnifica S, 2200 Series, EQ300), a compact one 15 cm. Tanks range from 0.7 L (Inissia, Senseo) to 1.9 L (Bambino Plus): the smaller the tank, the more often you refill it. Grinding is noisy on every bean-to-cup model; no product page in our selection states a noise level in decibels, so we cannot rank them on that point.
What budget for a coffee machine?
A coffee machine costs 21.99 to 455.00 euros in our selection, checked on 07/10/2026. The budget depends on the type of machine more than on the brand.
- Under 40 euros: the Bialetti moka pot (21.99 euros), the Moulinex Subito (34.99 euros) and Easy II (37.09 euros) drip coffee makers, the Piccolo XS (39.99 euros).
- 70 to 140 euros: the Senseo Original Plus (69.99 euros), the Nespresso Vertuo Pop (75.99 euros) and Inissia (79.00 euros), the Stilosa (89.90 euros) and Dedica Style (138.98 euros) manual machines.
- 230 to 390 euros: bean-to-cup machines, from the 2200 Series (236.55 euros) to the EQ300 (386.99 euros).
- Over 400 euros: the Bambino Plus (455.00 euros), with no built-in grinder.
The price shown on Amazon when you buy is the one that applies.
The purchase price is not the whole story: a capsule costs more than a dose of beans, and the gap widens if you drink several cups a day. Coffee machine deals come around often, but we only show the price recorded on the day of the update, never a crossed-out price. The cheapest models of each type are gathered on our cheap coffee machine page.
How to clean and descale a coffee machine
A coffee machine needs three habits: empty and rinse every day, clean the parts that touch milk after use, and descale according to how hard your water is.
Descaling
Limescale clogs the circuits and changes the taste. The bean-to-cup machines in our selection have a descaling programme and a warning light that tells you when to descale. A water filter cartridge spaces out descaling: Philips claims up to 5,000 cups with AquaClean (Amazon page of the bundle with the cartridge), Melitta a single descaling a year with Pro Aqua (Amazon page of the Caffeo Solo). Use the descaler recommended in your machine's manual.
Cleaning the brewing unit and grounds container
Empty the grounds container and drip tray every day. On machines with a removable brewing unit (EQ300, Caffeo Solo), rinse it under clean water every week. Krups' Essential has nothing to take apart according to its Amazon page: a cleaning tablet about three times a year and an internal rinse after every cup. On the Coffee Crush, you empty the grounds after every cup.
Coffee makers without electronics
A moka pot is rinsed with clean water only, with no detergent or dishwasher, according to Bialetti. A drip coffee maker needs descaling now and then; on the Moulinex Subito, the filter holder and the jug are dishwasher safe according to its product page.

How we selected these models
I picked 16 coffee machines available on 07/10/2026, covering all six types and every budget. For each one, I recorded the price, availability and seller on the Amazon France page, then cross-checked power, pressure, tank size and milk system against the manufacturer's page; a value that is missing or contradictory is marked "n.c.". None of these machines has been tested hands-on: the score out of 5 is an editor's opinion based on features, upkeep, stated repairability and price. The details are on our method page. For the rest of your small appliances, our air fryer selection and our blender guide follow the same method, as our deep fryer page soon will.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a capsule machine and a bean-to-cup machine?
A bean-to-cup machine grinds just before brewing: the cup is fresher and cheaper, but the machine costs more to buy (see the budget section) and needs regular upkeep. A capsule machine uses a pre-ground, pre-packed dose: it is cheaper to buy and simpler, but each capsule costs more and ties you to one system.
What are the best coffee machine brands?
It depends on the type. For bean-to-cup machines, De'Longhi, Philips, Krups, Siemens and Melitta are the most widespread. For manual espresso, De'Longhi at the entry level and Sage higher up. For capsules, Nespresso and Dolce Gusto, several of whose machines are made by Krups.
Which coffee machine should you choose for under 350 euros?
Under 350 euros, you can pick from every type. For bean-to-cup espresso, the 2200 Series, the Magnifica S, the Essential and the Caffeo Solo are all below that threshold in our 07/10/2026 price check. On a tighter budget, a manual espresso machine paired with a grinder, or a capsule machine, will do.
Why choose an automatic coffee machine with a grinder?
An automatic machine with a grinder grinds beans for every cup, which keeps the aromas that ground coffee loses within a few days. It lets you set the grind, strength and cup size, and beans cost less than capsules. On the other hand, it costs more, it is noisy when grinding and it needs regular descaling.
How often should you descale a coffee machine?
It depends on how hard your water is and how many cups you make: follow the machine's descaling light when it has one. A water filter cartridge spaces out descaling a lot: up to 5,000 cups according to Philips with AquaClean, once a year with the Pro Aqua cartridge of the Caffeo Solo. A stovetop moka pot has no circuit to descale.
How do you make a good espresso at home?
A good espresso needs freshly ground beans, a fine grind, soft water and a clean machine. On a manual machine, dosing and tamping matter too. About 9 bar at extraction is enough: the 15 or 19 bar on the box is the pump's capacity.
