Compact coffee machine: 7 small bean-to-cup and capsule models

By Charles Updated on 23/10/2026 Analysed Editor's review

A compact coffee machine fits on a narrow worktop, in a studio flat, an office or a kitchen that is already full: 11 to 18 cm wide for the models in this selection, against 23 to 25 cm for a standard bean-to-cup coffee machine. The format exists in all three families: the small bean-to-cup machine with a grinder, the portafilter espresso machine and the capsule machine. I picked 7 Krups, Philips, De'Longhi and Nespresso models sold on Amazon, checked their prices on 23/10/2026 and read their product pages; each one comes with its drawback spelled out.

Small black espresso machine on the narrow worktop of a studio kitchen, a steaming espresso cup in front of it and a jar of coffee beans beside it

Compact coffee machine: our 3 picks

For coffee beans, go for the Krups Coffee Crush; for a portafilter espresso, the De'Longhi Dedica Style; for the simplest capsule machine, the Nespresso Inissia.

Compact bean-to-cup: Krups Coffee Crush SA4028E0 (€329.99 on 23/10/2026). The drawback first: no milk system and only three grind settings, at this price. In return, it grinds beans in 15 cm of width according to Krups, with 15 bar, a 1.8 L tank and a drawer for ground coffee, handy for decaf. Krups announces 15 years of repairability.

Espresso and cappuccino: De'Longhi Dedica Style EC685.M (€131.46 on 23/10/2026). Limit: no grinder, so you need ground coffee or ESE pods, and De'Longhi shows two different power ratings on its page. Otherwise, 15 cm wide, 15 bar, a thermoblock, a 1.1 L tank and a steam wand to froth milk.

Capsules: De'Longhi Nespresso Inissia EN80.B (€79.00 on 23/10/2026). Drawback: no milk, and a 0.7 L tank to refill often. It is 12 cm wide, reaches 19 bar, heats up in 25 seconds and switches itself off after 9 minutes; Nespresso Original capsules are sold everywhere.

Why choose a small coffee maker?

A small coffee maker is chosen first for the space it frees up on the worktop.

  • The upsides: a narrow machine, 11 to 18 cm wide, that slips between the kettle and the wall, a weight of 2 to 5 kg that is easy to store in a cupboard, and a low entry price for capsules (€50 to €90 when we checked). The bean-to-cup version keeps the aroma of freshly ground beans without taking up the space of a standard automatic machine.
  • The limits: a smaller tank (0.7 to 0.8 L on the capsule machines), fewer drinks and settings, and no milk on half of the selection. A mini coffee machine serves one or two people; for a family that drinks cappuccino after cappuccino, a full-size model remains more comfortable.

How to choose a compact coffee machine

Beans, portafilter or capsules

The type of machine sets the cost per cup and the time you spend. The compact bean-to-cup machine (Coffee Crush, Baristina) grinds beans for every cup: the lowest cost per cup, for a purchase of €320 to €330. The portafilter espresso machine (Dedica Style, Virtuoso) needs ground coffee and one more step, for €120 to €135. The capsule machine (Inissia, Essenza Mini, Piccolo XS) is the simplest and cheapest to buy, but each capsule costs more than beans.

Footprint: width, depth and height

Measure your worktop before ordering, and not only the width. The Baristina is 18 cm wide but 38 cm deep according to Amazon; the Inissia is 12 cm wide, 32 cm deep and 23 cm high. Also check the height under wall cabinets if the tank fills from the top.

The water tank

A small tank needs refilling more often: 0.7 L on the Inissia, 0.8 L on the Piccolo XS, against 1.1 L on the Dedica Style and the Virtuoso and 1.8 L on the Coffee Crush. For two people drinking several coffees a day, aim for at least 1 L.

The grind: built-in grinder or pre-ground coffee

On a bean-to-cup machine, the grind setting changes the taste: a finer grind gives a stronger espresso with more crema. The Coffee Crush offers only three grind settings; the Baristina grinds, tamps and brews on its own, with no setting listed on its Amazon page. Portafilter and capsule machines have no grinder: the coffee arrives already ground, in a bag, an ESE pod or a capsule.

Milk: steam wand or nothing

Only the portafilter espresso machines in the selection have a steam wand for frothing (Dedica Style, Virtuoso). The Piccolo XS uses Dolce Gusto milk capsules. The others make espresso or black long coffee: you then need a separate frother for cappuccino.

Pressure in bar

15 bar is enough for an espresso; Nespresso machines announce 19 bar and the Baristina 16 bar. Pressure matters less than the grind and the freshness of the beans: do not pick a compact coffee maker on this figure alone.

How to look after a compact coffee machine

A compact coffee maker needs the same care as a full-size model, with a smaller tank that scales up just as fast.

Descaling

Limescale from the water builds up in the circuit and the thermoblock. Descale with the product recommended by the manufacturer, at a frequency that depends on water hardness: the harder the water, the more often. Filtered water spaces out descaling.

Cleaning the grounds container and the brewing unit

On a bean-to-cup machine, empty the grounds container and rinse the drip tray regularly; the brewing unit is rinsed with clean water as the manual explains. On a portafilter, rinse the filter and purge the steam wand after every cappuccino. On a capsule machine, empty the used capsule container before it overflows; the Piccolo XS capsule holder is dishwasher-safe according to Krups.

What budget for a compact coffee machine?

Type Models in the selection Prices checked on 23/10/2026
Capsules Piccolo XS, Inissia, Essenza Mini €50.01 to €87.57
Portafilter espresso Virtuoso, Dedica Style €119.85 to €131.46
Bean-to-cup with grinder Baristina, Coffee Crush €319.99 to €329.99

Allow around fifty euros for an entry-level capsule model, a little over €100 for a compact espresso machine with a steam wand, and around €320 for a compact bean-to-cup machine. In use, coffee beans cost less per cup than capsules.

How we picked these models

We have not tested these machines in a kitchen: the selection relies on manufacturer product pages, the specifications published on Amazon and the prices checked on 23/10/2026. We kept compact coffee makers no wider than 18 cm, in stock when we checked. Three models were left out: the De'Longhi Magnifica Start (24 cm wide, the size of a standard bean-to-cup machine), the De'Longhi Rivelia (width differs between sources) and the Smeg BCC13 (inconsistent dimensions and power on its Amazon listing).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best compact coffee machine?

It depends on the coffee you drink. For beans ground for every cup, the Krups Coffee Crush fits in 15 cm of width. For an espresso and cappuccino at a low price, the De'Longhi Dedica Style. For a capsule with no settings, the Nespresso Inissia, the cheapest of the three.

Is there a compact bean-to-cup coffee machine?

Yes. The Krups Coffee Crush is 15 cm wide according to Krups and the Philips Baristina 18 cm according to Amazon, against 23 to 25 cm for standard bean-to-cup machines. Both grind beans for every cup; neither lists a steam wand on its product page.

What is the smallest coffee maker?

In this selection, the Nespresso Essenza Mini: 11 cm wide and 2.3 kg according to Amazon. The Inissia follows at 12 cm. Both are capsule machines with no milk; for a portafilter espresso, the Krups Virtuoso goes down to 14.3 cm.

Does a compact coffee machine make a good espresso?

Yes, size does not change the pressure: 15 bar on the portafilters and the Coffee Crush, 16 bar on the Baristina, 19 bar on the Nespresso machines. The difference comes from the coffee used, freshly ground, pre-ground or in a capsule, and from the smaller tank that needs refilling more often.
