Fondue set: compare electric and traditional models and prices

By Charles Neveu Updated on 07/10/2026 Analysed Editor's review

A fondue set comes down first to the fondue you serve most often: Savoyard cheese fondue, beef cooked in hot oil (fondue bourguignonne), Chinese-style broth fondue, or chocolate for dessert. The pot, the wattage and the heat source follow from that. I compared 15 models sold on Amazon France, from a small pot for two to an 8-person electric unit, reading each manufacturer's product page and recording prices on 07/10/2026. Every model has its drawback spelled out before its strengths.

Cheese fondue with friends: steaming fondue pot in the middle of a wooden table, forks with coloured handles, potatoes, cured meats, gherkins and white wine

What is the best fondue set?

The best fondue set depends on how many people you feed: no single model does everything equally well. For 8 people and every kind of fondue, the Tristar FO-1109 (1,400 W, 44.99 euros on 07/10/2026) gives you the most wattage for the money, and the Tefal Simply Invent adds a turntable with 5 sauce ramekins and is made in Haute-Savoie. For cheese fondue in a traditional pot, the Little Balance La Savoyarde 8 is the best fit; for a meat fondue without a cord, the Beka Arôme cast iron set with its splash guard.

Which type of fondue set should you choose?

There are two main families: the electric fondue pot with a thermostat, and the traditional fondue set that sits on a stand over a burner. The type of fondue then decides the pot: ceramic or cast iron for cheese, stainless steel or cast iron with a lid for oil and broth. The table at the end of this section sums up the six cases.

The electric fondue pot

An electric fondue pot heats through a base plugged into the mains, with an adjustable thermostat: you melt or cook, then keep things warm without watching a flame. The electric models for 6 to 8 people in our selection range from 800 to 1,400 W. It is the easiest fondue maker to live with, and the most versatile: the same pot goes from cheese to chocolate. Its limits: the cord across the table (2 m on the Tefal Simply Invent, the Lagrange Héritage and the Boska Party), and a non-stick coating you need to treat gently, with wooden utensils and a soft sponge.

The traditional fondue set with stand and burner

A traditional fondue set combines a pot, a stand and a burner running on fuel paste or gel: nothing to plug in, you put it wherever you like. Beka and Staub make them in enamelled cast iron for 6 people, Baumalu a Savoyard set with a burner, from 33.58 to 166.06 euros when we checked on 07/10/2026. The burner keeps things warm but does not do all the work: the cheese is melted on the hob first, which is why a pot that works on any hob, induction included, is useful. Our traditional fondue set page compares these sets.

The cheese fondue set

Savoyard cheese fondue needs gentle, even heat so that the Comté, Beaufort and Emmental melt into the white wine without sticking or boiling, before everyone dips their bread. The ideal pot is wide and thick, in ceramic or enamelled cast iron: that is Little Balance's choice (a 2.6 L ceramic pot) and that of the cast iron sets. An adjustable thermostat lets you turn the heat down once the cheese has melted. The models designed for cheese are gathered on our cheese fondue set page.

The meat fondue set (fondue bourguignonne)

In a fondue bourguignonne, everyone dips their meat into hot oil: you need enough wattage to keep it hot while eight forks are in it, and a splash guard. The WMF Lono (1,400 W, stainless steel) or the Tristar FO-1109 do the job on electricity; the Arôme set does it over a burner, with a cast iron lid. Before pouring oil into your pot, check that the manufacturer allows it: Little Balance does for its Savoyarde 8. Our meat fondue set page covers these models.

The Chinese fondue pot

Chinese fondue swaps the oil for a broth in which you cook thin slices of meat, prawns and vegetables: it needs a large pot and enough heat to keep the broth simmering all evening. Every electric model with a thermostat can do it; WMF and Boska mention broth on their product pages, and the Boska Party takes 1.5 L of broth. Our Chinese fondue pot page compares the suitable models.

The raclette and fondue combo

A combo adds a fondue pot to a raclette grill: the Tefal Cheese'n'co does raclette, fondue, tartiflette and crepes for 6 people, with 850 W. It makes sense if you own neither and are short on cupboard space. If you often host 8, two dedicated machines do better: our raclette grill selection follows the same method as this page.

Chocolate fondue

For dessert, a small 25 W unit is enough: the Bestron DCM043 melts 0.3 L of chocolate and keeps it warm for two, at 15.19 euros on 07/10/2026. Most of the electric models in our selection also take chocolate (Tefal, Tristar, Boska and Little Balance mention it), as long as you set the thermostat to its lowest.

How to choose a fondue maker

A fondue maker comes down to five criteria: wattage, capacity compared with the number of guests, pot material, heat source and cleaning.

Wattage

Wattage matters most for oil and broth: with 1,200 to 1,400 W (Lagrange Héritage, Tristar FO-1109, WMF Lono), the liquid heats back up faster each time someone dips a fork. For cheese and chocolate, 800 to 900 W is enough, since the aim is to keep warm without boiling. The adjustable thermostat matters as much as the watts: every electric model in our selection dedicated to fondue has one, while the Bestron mini fondue has two settings.

Capacity and number of guests

Look at the usable capacity, not the total volume of the pot. Livoo states it honestly: a 2.4 L pot, 1 L usable. Allow plenty for 8: 1.5 L usable (Lagrange Héritage, Boska Party for cheese) leaves some margin, while 1.2 to 1.3 L means topping up oil or cheese during the meal. The number of forks supplied hints at the number of guests intended: 8 on most electric models, 6 on the cast iron sets, 4 on the Boska Pro S.

The pot: cast iron, ceramic, stainless steel or non-stick

Enamelled cast iron holds heat for a long time and works on every hob, induction included at Beka and Staub; it is heavy. Ceramic, the traditional choice for cheese fondue, heats gently. Stainless steel (WMF, Tristar) is sturdy and suits meat fondue and broth. Non-stick coatings make cleaning easier: Tefal states a PTFE coating, whereas Livoo and Boska advertise a PFAS-free coating. Pots that work on any hob (Lagrange, Boska Pro S, Beka, Staub) let you start the fondue on the cooker.

Heat source: electricity, burner or tealight

Electricity gives a steady, adjustable temperature. A burner runs on fuel paste or fuel gel in a canister, sometimes methylated spirit depending on the model: check what the manufacturer specifies. Tealights, as on the Boska Pro S, only keep a small pot warm. A burner is handy on a terrace or with no socket nearby; electric is simpler for everyday use.

Cleaning and safety

For cleaning, check three things: a removable pot, dishwasher compatibility and a base you can wipe. Tristar, Livoo and Tefal state that the pot and forks go in the dishwasher; Boska rules it out for its Party set, and the sellers of the Beka and Staub cast iron sets recommend hand washing. For safety, look for insulated handles, non-slip feet, a splash guard for oil and overheat protection (stated on both Little Balance models).

What budget for a fondue set?

A fondue set costs from 15 to 166 euros based on our records of 07/10/2026. Budget follows the type of set and where it is made more than the wattage.

  • Under 35 euros, the cheap fondue set: the Bestron chocolate mini fondue (15.19 euros), the PFAS-free Livoo DOC333 (32.99 euros), the Beka Arôme cast iron set (33.58 euros) and the Little Balance Happy Fondue 8 (34.99 euros).
  • 40 to 70 euros: the Boska Pro S for two (42.49 euros), the Tristar FO-1109 (44.99 euros), the Baumalu burner set (51.91 euros) and the Boska Party (67.99 euros).
  • 80 to 100 euros: models made in France or better finished, from the Tefal Simply Invent (81.00 euros) to the Lagrange Héritage (99.99 euros), including the WMF Lono (81.19 euros), the Little Balance La Savoyarde 8 (81.70 euros), the Tefal Cheese'n'co (82.00 euros) and the Lagrange Prestige (96.00 euros).
  • Over 150 euros: the French-made Staub cast iron set (166.06 euros).

How we selected these models

I picked 15 fondue sets on sale on 07/10/2026, covering every type of fondue and every table size. For each one, I recorded the price, availability and seller on the Amazon France page, then cross-checked wattage, capacity, number of guests and cleaning against the manufacturer's page; a value that could not be found or that conflicted is marked "n.c.". Baumalu and Bestron have no product page we could read: for them, only the seller's data is used, and the drawback says so. I left out the Tefal Inox & Design (its Amazon page mixes two references and two brands, with a third-party seller), the Fackelmann set for two (shipping announced within 6 to 7 months) and the Severin FO 2471 (a single unit left, no readable Severin page). None of these sets was tested hands-on: the score out of 5 is an editor's review based on wattage, capacity, cleaning and price. The details are on our method page. To round off winter evenings, our waffle maker selection follows the same method, and the griddle takes over when the weather turns warm.

Frequently asked questions

What fuel does a fondue burner use?

A traditional fondue set runs on fuel paste or fuel gel, sold in canisters or tubs, or on methylated spirit for wick burners. The right fuel is the one your burner's instructions specify. Never refill a burner that is still hot. An electric fondue pot only needs a socket.

How do you make fondue without a fondue maker?

Melt the cheese over low heat in a heavy-based saucepan or a cast iron casserole, stirring, then set it in the middle of the table on a stand or a plate warmer to keep it hot. With no heat source at the table, the cheese stiffens quickly: serve it straight away and reheat it on the hob if needed.

What is the best pot for fondue?

For cheese fondue, a wide, thick pot in ceramic or enamelled cast iron spreads the heat without burning the bottom. For meat or Chinese fondue, go for cast iron or stainless steel, taller, with a splash guard. A pot that works on any hob, induction included, lets you start cooking on the cooker.

What wattage should a fondue pot have?

For cheese or chocolate fondue, 800 to 900 W is enough, with an adjustable thermostat to keep it warm. For meat or Chinese fondue for 8, aim for 1,200 to 1,400 W: oil and broth cool down each time forks go in, and the extra wattage brings them back up faster.

How do you clean a fondue set?

Unplug the appliance and let it cool. Soak the pot in hot water to loosen the cheese, then wash it with a non-abrasive sponge, or in the dishwasher if the manufacturer allows it (Tristar, Livoo, Tefal). Never put the electric base in water: wipe it with a damp cloth.

Can you make cheese fondue in an electric fondue pot?

Yes: Tefal, Tristar, Lagrange, Little Balance, Livoo and Boska all mention cheese fondue for their electric models. Set the thermostat low enough to stop the fondue boiling or sticking, and stir from time to time. A ceramic pot, like the one on the Little Balance La Savoyarde 8, comes closest to the traditional caquelon.
