Traditional fondue set: burner and stand models compared

By Charles Neveu Updated on 07/10/2026 Analysed Editor's review

A traditional fondue set brings together a pot (the caquelon), a stand and a burner that runs on fuel paste, gel or methylated spirit: no cord, no socket, and the cheese melted in white wine stays hot in the middle of the table. If you are still weighing it against an electric model, our fondue set page compares every type. Here I have gathered 11 enamelled cast iron or ceramic sets, from Beka to Staub, Kuhn Rikon and Emile Henry, after reading their manufacturer pages and checking their prices on 07/10/2026. Each one has its drawback spelled out.

Enamelled cast iron fondue pot full of melted cheese on a wrought iron stand over a lit burner, on a wooden chalet table with bread, fondue forks, white wine and a garlic clove

Traditional fondue set: our 3 picks

For a cheese fondue for 6, go for the red cast iron Baumalu; for a meat fondue or a tight budget, the Beka Arôme; for a French-made ceramic pot, the Emile Henry Grand Cru.

For a cheese fondue for 6: Baumalu 385052 (51.91 euros on 07/10/2026). Its drawback first: neither the maker nor the seller gives the capacity, there is no splash guard for oil, and fuel paste is not included. Otherwise, it is the complete set described for 6 people: a red enamelled cast iron pot, a stand, a burner and six forks with coloured tips.

For a meat fondue on a budget: Beka Arôme 16303734 (33.58 euros on 07/10/2026). The catch: 1.1 L is tight for 6 people, and it is not dishwasher safe according to the Amazon listing. In return, its cast iron lid stops oil from spitting, and the pot works on every hob, induction and oven included.

For a French-made pot: Emile Henry Grand Cru EH349922 (164.90 euros on 07/10/2026). Its limits: only 2 were left with a third-party seller when we checked, and induction needs an adapter disc. The brand makes it in France from its Flame ceramic, guarantees it for 10 years and rates it for 6 people; it goes in the oven, the microwave and the dishwasher.

Why choose a traditional fondue set?

You choose a traditional fondue set for its freedom and its pot, not for precise temperature control. With no power cord, it can sit anywhere for a shared meal, and the pot also works on the hob or in the oven.

  • The advantages: no socket needed; a pot that goes on the hob, induction included at Beka, Staub, Kuhn Rikon, Rotel and Fackelmann; long guarantees (10 years at Emile Henry, lifetime at Boska); and the ritual of winter evenings, as in a chalet in Savoie or Switzerland.
  • The limits: the flame keeps things warm but cannot be set to the degree, the cheese has to melt on the hob first, fuel is almost always sold separately, and an open flame needs watching when children are at the table.

For a Chinese fondue, where the broth has to simmer all evening, an electric pot with a thermostat is easier: our Chinese fondue pot page will gather suitable models.

Cast iron or ceramic fondue pot?

Choose enamelled cast iron if you make every kind of fondue, ceramic if you mostly make cheese fondue. Cast iron heats up and holds its heat for a long time: it copes with the hot oil of a meat fondue and, at most makers in this selection, with induction. It is heavy: 4.96 kg for the 20 cm Staub according to its spec sheet. Ceramic, the heir of the earthenware caquelon, spreads heat gently: Emile Henry points out that Savoyard fondue has always been made in an earthenware pot rubbed with a clove of garlic.

How to choose a traditional fondue set

Look in this order at the type of fondue you serve, the capacity for your guests, the fuel, then compatibility with your hob and the dishwasher.

The type of fondue: Savoyard, Swiss or meat

A traditional cheese fondue set has a wide, shallow pot, 20 to 24 cm at Staub, Emile Henry and Kuhn Rikon: you melt grated Comté, Beaufort or Emmental in white wine. For Swiss fondue, it is moitié-moitié, Gruyère and Vacherin Fribourgeois, often with a dash of kirsch. Sets designed for meat have a smaller pot, 15 cm at Beka and 17 cm for the black Baumalu, with a splash guard. Cheese-only models, electric ones included, will be gathered on our cheese fondue set page.

Capacity and number of guests

Most of these sets are designed for 6 people, with 6 forks. Capacity still varies threefold: 1.1 L at Beka, 2 L at Rotel, 2.3 L at Staub, 3.2 L at Kuhn Rikon. Check the usable capacity too: Boska gives 1.3 L to the brim for its Nero, but 1 L of cheese at most, and rates it for 4 people as a meal. Beyond 6, an electric model for 8 will be simpler than a second set.

Fuel: paste, gel or methylated spirit

The burner keeps the pot warm: melt the cheese or heat the oil on the hob first, then set the pot on its stand. Depending on the model, it runs on paste (Baumalu, Kuhn Rikon), gel (Swissmar) or methylated spirit (Fackelmann). Only use what the instructions specify, and never refill a burner that is still hot. If you already own a pot, the Kela Natura 61000 stand on its own (37.30 euros on 07/10/2026) provides the base and its burner.

Hobs, induction and cleaning

Check that the pot suits your hob: Beka, Staub, Kuhn Rikon, Rotel and Fackelmann list induction, Emile Henry only with an adapter disc, and Boska lists gas only for the Nero. For cleaning, Emile Henry allows the dishwasher, as does Boska for the Nero's pot and forks, while Beka, Rotel and Fackelmann rule it out and Kuhn Rikon recommends hand washing. Enamelled cast iron cleans up after a soak in hot water, without an abrasive sponge.

Traditional or electric fondue set?

The traditional set wins on freedom and ritual, the electric one on temperature: its thermostat keeps oil and broth at the right heat, and many models, from Tefal or Lagrange, seat 8. Our guide to electric and traditional fondue sets puts both families side by side, raclette combos included.

How we selected these models

I picked 11 traditional fondue sets on sale on Amazon on 07/10/2026, from a set for two to a 3.2 L pot. For each, I noted the price, availability and seller on the Amazon listing, then cross-checked the material, capacity, number of people, fuel and cleaning against the manufacturer's page. A missing or contradictory value is marked "n.c.". None of these sets has been tested hands-on: the score out of 5 is an editor's review based on this data, cleaning and price. Our full approach is on our method page.

The models we left out

  • Le Creuset 2 L fondue set: 339.00 euros from a third-party seller when we checked on 07/10/2026, and the official product page, which we could not access, does not let us confirm what the set includes. The price shown on Amazon when you buy is the one that applies.
  • Sitram 713351: no manufacturer page describes this set, so its capacity remains unknown.
  • Swissmar Sierra F66708 and Emile Henry Noir Fusain EH799922: shipping quoted at 6 to 7 months when we checked.
  • Staub La Fondue 18 cm: shipping in 3 to 4 days when we checked, while the 20 cm model was in stock.

Frequently asked questions

What is a cheese fondue pot called?

The pot is called a caquelon, and the whole set of pot, stand (or trivet), burner and forks is called a fondue set. The traditional caquelon for Savoyard fondue is made of earthenware, ceramic or enamelled cast iron.

What fuel does a traditional fondue set use?

The right fuel is the one your burner's instructions specify: fuel paste for paste burners, gel in a canister, or methylated spirit for wick burners. It is rarely included with the set. Never refill a burner that is still hot.

How do you use a traditional fondue set?

Rub the pot with a clove of garlic, melt the cheese in white wine over a low heat on the hob while stirring, then light the burner and set the pot on its stand. Everyone can then dip their bread with their fork; adjust the flame with the burner's shutter if it has one.

Can a cast iron fondue pot go on induction?

Yes, if the maker says so: that is the case for Beka, Staub, Kuhn Rikon, Rotel and Fackelmann in this selection. Emile Henry's ceramic needs an adapter disc, and the Boska Nero is for gas only.

What is the best traditional fondue set?

The best one depends on your fondue: the Baumalu 385052 for a cheese fondue for 6, the Beka Arôme for meat fondue with its splash guard, the Emile Henry Grand Cru for a French-made ceramic pot. All three are designed for 6 people.
